To Like, or Not to Like, That Is the Question

More quiz features coming soon...

We've added a couple of new features to our development pipeline. They include commenting and question rating, allowing players to comment on a particular question/ answer/ topic and also allowing them to rate questions up or down, like or not like respectively. The first will help users connect with each other as comments will link to user profiles. The latter will allow our hard-working editors and our algorithms to serve better questions in the future. Until then, we'll keep you in the loop.

New Deadline Leaderboard. Get on top.

Last month, after getting feedback about the leaderboard, we asked Deadliners what their thoughts were on some proposed alternatives. And boy did we get a response.

The main issue with the current leaderboard is that it's cumulative, so new players don't have a chance of getting to the top.

Ideally, our goal is to make things a little more competitive and give everyone a chance to play for the No. 1 spot every day. So we proposed creating a daily leaderboard. That would give everyone a chance to be king or queen for a day, and allow us to tally weekly and monthly wins so we can reward those who play often and well. In terms of ranking, you would continue to be ranked amongst your friends and the Deadline universe.
At first we told everybody that changing the leaderboard would mean resetting everyone's scores to 0 (zero), but after the overwhelming and passionate responses we got from players, we're definitely not going to erase any points you've earned.

We still have to solve another problem: those who play daily will eventually have a limited number of questions they can answer in a 24-hr period, whereas newbies will have access to a pool of roughly 350 active questions. How do you think we should handle this? Do we limit the number of questions available each day?

In any case, we haven't instituted the new changes yet, but as soon as our dev team is freed from Olympic duties, we'll be rolling out a daily and weekly leaderboard in addition to the all-time leaderboard.

Deadline: Heads up for 2008

It was three months ago, in cramped and carpeted quarters at the San Francisco's Embarcadero Center, that we launched our first Facebook application: Deadline, our not-so-trivial news quiz with long questions and even longer answers. Some of you might remember.

Since then, we've upgraded; we rolled out some cool features (more to come) and expanded our players from the 11 people who brought you deadline to 35,000 players from around the world. And the swank new office is a definite improvement.

Thanks for the support (Merci, Danke, Gracias...). We hope you keep playing as we continue to roll out new features and other news-based applications.

In 2007

  • We added cheats.
  • We integrated news articles behind every question. These are accessible from both the answer and review pages. Oh yes, you can also bookmark them and share them by posting them to your profile and/or by sending them to friends.
  • Due to your ravenous appetite for questions and the growing ranks who have soared to astronomical point totals, we had a level shakeup as well.
  • Bryan Whalen from AppRate.com wrote an (awesome) review about Deadline right before Christmas, check it out at: http://www.apprate.com/deadline-346/
  • Our first ever Year in Review challenge was a success. Nearly 1500 people gave it a try, including 10 prizewinners who came from different corners of the world - US, India, China, Turkey, Australia, Algeria, Canada. Congratulations to all.

For 2008

You can expect to see some of these features soon, as well as some other surprises:

  • bragging feature
  • challenges
  • submit your own questions
  • multimedia
  • ... and much more.

Not to be missed

Check out Fuel News. Fuel News is our latest App, a place where you can deepen your knowledge and discover the stories you might have missed.

We are attentive to your feedback with regards to features so keep it coming.

Last but not least, we'd like to remind you can Rate the App and Share it with friends.

Thanks again, enjoy the news!

Global audience playing Deadline on Facebook

It’s no surprise that our biggest group of players comes from the US (based on Facebook’s user profile data). After all, the US has the largest population on Facebook and Deadline is only available in English for the time being. What’s exciting is the fact that 70.47% of our players are non-US English speakers; the other 100 or so countries that show up on our screens remind us of our global audience.

We’ve got a sneak peek of some of the data we’re seeing; insights are pretty general but interesting (at least to us). In the past month, Jan 19 and Feb 18 2008, visits came from 102 different countries/territories. Here are the top 25:

AppRate - "Deadline is the slickest, best looking app on Facebook"

apprate.jpg

Deadline's first online review, a very nice Christmas present.... Thanks Bryan.

"I'm going to go out on a limb here: Deadline is the slickest, best looking app on Facebook. No contest. Now I'm sure you could argue for other well produced applications taking the title, but wouldn't that be a High-Class Problem? Indeed. I spend countless hours days weeks poo-pooing useless, ill conceived and poorly produced apps, in the hopes that 1 out of a 100 will come even close to retaining my attention for more than 2 minutes. Congratulations, Deadline, you've done it."
